Still Standing (Open Mic)

They say you can do anything
Whatever you dream
Biggie said, the sky is the limit
That you can be whatever you want to be
At least that is what your parents tell you to see
When secretly they expect you to fail
To never fulfill the dreams of playing sports, writing songs or making it to Yale
Society wants to win
To make you fall just before the finish line
Most do fall
Otherwise there would be a lot more people in the NFL, NBA, and acting on Broadway
People claim they aren’t good enough
But really all they're saying is, I stopped working hard enough
They gave up there child inside
For hated weekdays 9-5
When it could have been, Monday night under the lights

You never hear the story about the guy who never made it
The guy who got cut from the team and gave up
The guy who settled for less
The guy who gave into the stress and never gave his best
The guy, who did what everyone does

Your parents expect you to fail because they too failed
They never made it big and so they see the same path for you
Only one, can write the pages of their life's journal
What will fill the pages are up to them
When Biggie said the sky is the limit, he really meant it
If you give it your all, through the good times and the bad
You will stand at the finish line of your childhood dream knowing that you broke the bell curve of mediocrity
Then you too, can write the inspiring fantasies we all read, but never truly believe
While everyone else has fallen, you will still be standing
